I am constantly keeping my ears opened for new music of all types, most recently with my discovery of the Silversun Pickups yesterday.
So, dear readers, I’m asking for your help. In the comments area of this post, tell me what artists/albums/songs you’re currently listening to right now? Even if you don’t consider it new, it might be to me or someone else. By the way Sam, I’m looking for you to pull through on this one since I know you’re a music junkie.
If you’re looking for some good ways to find new music yourself, I’ve got a few great sites for you:
While I’m still talking about music, I want to point you to a CBC interview with the Barenaked Ladies (Windows Media Player required). Besides being one of my all time favorite bands (Canadian or otherwise), the Ladies really get the changes affecting the music industry. They even distributed their last album (The Barenaked Ladies are Me) as DRM-free MP3s on USB thumb drives. The band’s new music label, Desperation Records, was also featured in a recent Wired Magazine story about the music industry – worth checking out.

All right then. I’m listening to Tom Waits’ “Orphans: Bawlers, Brawlers, & Bastards” -excellent collection of poetry and prose along-side of Waits’ raw and rare methods of music.
Also, in my truck I’ve got the Rolling Stones “Exile on Main Street” one of my favorites (even though it’s not one of Mick’s).
In the office and iPod (which is missing…and I am crying) is The Bad Plus “These are the Vistas” -some very cool free Jazz
I definitely suggest taking a listen to this one -1972 bronze medalist or their cover of Blondie’s Heart of glass.
I listened to a pretty tight list, but I’m open to so much when it comes to music. I just rented a DVD called “Ghengis Blues”. It features Paul Pena and Tuvan throat singers. Crazy stuff.
Also, I’m a steady listener of NPR and local public radio, so a plethora of “classical” pieces.
To recap:
Gordon Lightfoot – “Summer side of life”
Tom Waits – Too much too mention – just check him out. And think of me when you do.
Rolling Stones: Exile on Main
Gorillaz: Demon Days
Rob Crabtree: Piper’s Journey -absolutely fabulous arrangements of bag pipe music
Bob Dylan is still in the player.
Check out my cousin Gary’s group “Mucca Pazza”
John Kimball’s “Been in the Heartland”
I’m sure there’s more, but that’s a good days worth.
Ben Prestage is an excellent one-man-show. He plays a small drum kit with his legs and feet and mostly does magically delicious things on his acoustic guitar. Hopefully I’ll post some of his stuff soon. I’ll be playing guitar with him on Wed. nights down at “The Office” bar & grill.
